Wear shoes and don’t bring too much gear; the western Malibu beach is only accessible via a steep gravelly path from a paid parking lot (unless you score a free pass with your library card). There are no lifeguards or other facilities, but it’s the perfect spot to spread your towel in the cupped hands of the rocks—just watch out for high tide when sand comes at a premium. Arriving early or staying late should reward you with a memorable dawn or sunset.

The Hotlel Magdalena, the largest to date from Bunkhouse, which is majority-owned by Standard Hotels, was designed in collaboration with Austin architecture firm Lake | Flato. Bunkhouse Group has helped define the look and feel of Austin as much as any hospitality company in the city over the last decade-plus with properties like the Hotel San Jose and Hotel Saint Cecilia. The restaurant is sure to be just one of the draws at the 89-room hotel that celebrated a soft opening earlier this fall. It’s the newest, and biggest, hotel from Bunkhouse, which also operates Hotel Saint Cecilia and Hotel San José in Austin, as well as El Cosmico in Marfa, Texas.

The allure of the canyons is inescapable once your car climbs their well-worn roads. The era of folk and free love trickled out of the mainstream but never left the canyons. Signed, original Scott Newton photographs decorate all of the rooms, many of which have private balconies. Guests will find a pool, a boutique, bikes to borrow, yoga classes, “well-stocked” minibars, and more on site; concierges can help hook it up off-property. Summer House on Music Lane, the full service restaurant at Hotel Magdalena, is inspired by the casual sophistication that defines a lake house weekend. The menu features honest cooking taking cues from old school hospitality but with a decidedly unpretentious, Austin sensibility.

Bunkhouse Group — the local hospitality company that includes Hotel San Jose and the celeb magnet Hotel St. Cecilia — has opened its first full-service restaurant in Austin, Summer House on Music Lane (its full name) as of November 6. The restaurant is in the group’s newest project, Hotel Magdalena, at 1101 Music Lane, just off South Congress, for dine-in service only.

The property is also the first from Bunkhouse “with a residential component, the Saint Cecilia Residences,” Lalvani adds.
